Discover Cj's Crab Shack

Walking along Ocean Drive, it’s hard not to get pulled in by the salty air, the music drifting from open patios, and the promise of seafood done right. That’s exactly how I ended up at Cj's Crab Shack for the first time, and honestly, it didn’t feel like a tourist stop so much as a laid-back diner where seafood lovers naturally gather. Sitting at 600 Ocean Dr, Miami Beach, FL 33139, United States, the location alone sets the mood, but it’s the food and the people that keep tables full.

The menu leans confidently into what a crab shack should be. Snow crab legs, Dungeness crab, shrimp baskets, fried fish sandwiches, and buttery lobster tails show up without unnecessary flair. When I ordered the crab legs, the server walked me through the seasoning options and suggested going classic with garlic butter, explaining that most regulars want to taste the seafood first. That advice paid off. The shells cracked cleanly, the meat was tender, and the whole process felt hands-on and satisfying-exactly the kind of crack-and-dip experience people expect when they come here.

From a professional food perspective, freshness matters more than presentation in seafood-focused diners. According to data shared by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, properly handled shellfish maintains flavor and safety when kept at consistent cold temperatures and cooked promptly. You can taste that attention here. The shrimp had a snap, the fish was flaky instead of mushy, and nothing arrived over-seasoned. That balance shows a kitchen that understands restraint, which isn’t always easy in high-traffic beach locations.

One thing I appreciated was how the staff handled busy hours. Ocean Drive restaurants can get chaotic, yet service stayed friendly and direct. Plates came out hot, napkins kept coming, and servers checked in without hovering. During one visit, a nearby table asked about sourcing, and the manager explained their rotating suppliers depending on seasonal availability, calling it fresh off the boat whenever possible. While not everything is local year-round, the transparency builds trust, and that honesty matters more than vague claims.

Reviews around Miami Beach often swing wildly, but this spot tends to land solidly in the middle-to-high range because expectations are clear. People aren’t coming for white tablecloths; they’re coming for seafood baskets, cold drinks, and a relaxed vibe. Families split combo platters, couples share crab boils, and solo diners grab stools for quick lunches. That mix says a lot about consistency. I’ve seen first-timers guided patiently through the menu, and repeat guests greeted like familiar faces.

The diner-style atmosphere also makes it approachable. You don’t need insider knowledge to order well here. Fried calamari works as a starter, crab cakes lean more on meat than filler, and the fries actually stay crisp despite the humidity. Portions are generous without being wasteful, which aligns with broader industry recommendations on responsible seafood consumption supported by groups like NOAA.

There are limits, of course. During peak evenings, wait times can stretch, and seating along Ocean Drive means occasional street noise. If you’re looking for a quiet, intimate dinner, this may not be the right fit. But if you want straightforward seafood, clear flavors, and a location that lets you watch Miami Beach roll by, this place delivers.

Between the approachable menu, reliable kitchen execution, and steady reviews from locals and visitors alike, Cj's Crab Shack earns its spot among Ocean Drive’s better-known seafood stops. The experience feels honest, the seefood tastes fresh, and the atmosphere stays true to what a crab shack on the beach should be.

  • Came for dinner before our cruise next day. We made reservation, funny that the receptionist never checked our reservation and just sat us. We opted to sit inside with A/C as the weather was very humid. Service was great and food was awesome! We had cocktails, snow crab dinners and shared a few appetizers, crab cake was one of the highlight! Overall everything was fresh and great tasting. Too bad we missed the stone crab season by 2 weeks, next time we will definitely come back for some stone crabs.

  • The inside of this place opens later in the day so my and my family had to sit outside which honestly wasn’t bad because of the breeze, Fans, and Umbrellas. The outside area had a cute vibe and it was nice. Our waiter was super nice and made sure we had everything we wanted and may need. I don’t particularly love the 18% service fee or the one check per table but it is what it is in Miami. All of the seafood we got was yummy but I will say that the crab seemed slightly over cooked. Overall we enjoyed our experience and food.

  • It was great. I had made reservations but got there 30 minutes early and was seated right away. We started with the calamari. It came out quickly. Hot and fresh. Outside was crispy and the inside was delicious and tender. The batter was a bit spicy, but not too hot. We loved it. We both ordered the fisherman platter with fish, shrimp, scallops and a crab cake. Blackened. R got fries, I got the corn on the cob. We both were tempted to try the side of Alfredo. They also offered veggies. The platters came out right after we had finished the calamari. Hot generous portions. It was all very delicious. The crab cake one of the best we have ever had. Lots of crab meat and not filled with celery! The service was on point. It was busy with folks having a good time but not so loud you can't have a conversation. Highly recommend. We will be back!

  • The crab was great, old bay is necessary Get the fried shrimp and corn! (Is sweet corn) Garlic shrimp was okay but the fried shrimp was better. The Alfredo is mid, but I came here for crab not pasta. We got the crab dip, it was good but not as much crab as we thought. The fried grouper was great!

  • I tried the the Shrimp Po Boy and found the shrimp dry small and tasteless. My mate got the crab and shrimp salad and it was good. The crab dip was not bad either. Overall not a bad place for food but the inside dining is closed during the day so we were forced to sit outside during 90 degree weather.

  • CJ’s Crab Shack was amazing! We ordered the King Crab, Snow Crab, Drunken Shrimp, and the Garlic Parmesan Bread—everything was delicious. The crab was perfectly cooked and full of flavor, and the Drunken Shrimp had an incredible, rich sauce (even if they were a little tough to peel!). We loved sitting outside—it’s such a great spot to take in all the Miami Beach action while enjoying a great meal. Our waitress was so friendly and attentive, which made the experience even better. The Mango Colada was sweet, refreshing, and absolutely excellent. And their 2 for $20 drink specials during happy hour are unbeatable. Plus, the King Crab was very reasonably priced, which was a pleasant surprise. Highly recommend CJ’s Crab Shack for delicious seafood, great drinks, and an awesome Miami Beach vibe!
